The Ultimate Test Drive Checklist

A test drive is your best free diagnostic tool — if you know what to feel, hear and watch for.

A test drive isn't a joyride; it's a diagnostic. Drive with the radio off and your senses on. Here's exactly how to make the most of it.

Before you move

  • Start the engine cold — a warm engine can mask hard-starting problems
  • Watch that every dashboard light illuminates then clears
  • Listen for knocking, ticking or hissing at idle

Steering and suspension

  • The car should track straight with light hands on the wheel
  • No clunks over bumps or when turning at low speed
  • No excessive body roll or bouncing after a dip

Transmission and drivetrain

  • Shifts should be smooth and timely, never harsh or delayed
  • No slipping (engine revs climbing without acceleration)
  • No shudder when accelerating from a stop

Braking

  • Firm pedal, straight stops, no pulling to one side
  • No grinding, squealing or pulsing through the pedal

Highway

  • Get to highway speed to feel for vibration and wind noise
  • Confirm the car holds a lane and accelerates confidently to merge

Watch Out

A short trip around the block isn't enough. Insist on at least 15–20 minutes including highway speeds and a few hard (but safe) stops.

CarLens Pro Tip

Test the air conditioning hard in Florida heat. A weak A/C system can be an expensive and common repair here.

A test drive reveals symptoms; an inspection finds the cause. Not sure about a car you're eyeing? A CarLens Pre-Purchase Inspection puts a certified expert under the hood before you spend a dime.
