The Complete Used Car Buying Checklist

A step-by-step checklist you can bring to any viewing — paperwork, body, engine, interior and the test drive.

Print this or keep it on your phone. Working through a checklist keeps emotion out of the decision and makes it obvious when a car isn't what the seller claims.

Paperwork check

Documents

  • Title in the seller's name, VIN matches the car
  • Vehicle history report reviewed
  • Service and maintenance records
  • Current registration and any recall notices

Exterior check

Body and glass

  • Even panel gaps and consistent paint color/texture
  • No rust at rockers, wheel arches and under doors
  • Tires match and have even, adequate tread
  • No cracks or chips in the windshield
  • Lights, signals and reverse lights all work

Interior check

Cabin and electronics

  • All warning lights turn on then off at startup
  • A/C blows cold and heat blows hot (critical in Florida)
  • Windows, locks, seats and infotainment function
  • No musty smell (a flood-damage red flag)

Under the hood

Engine bay

  • No active oil, coolant or transmission fluid leaks
  • Clean oil on the dipstick, correct level
  • No milky residue on the oil cap (head gasket sign)
  • Belts and hoses free of cracks

Test drive

On the road

  • Cold start — listen for knocks or long crank
  • Smooth, predictable shifts with no slipping
  • Straight tracking with hands off the wheel
  • Firm, straight braking with no pulsing or noise
  • No vibration at highway speed

Watch Out

If a seller won't allow a test drive or an independent inspection, walk away. Honest sellers welcome scrutiny.
