The way a seller answers is often as revealing as the answer itself. Hesitation, vague replies or defensiveness are signals worth noting.
Ownership and history
- How long have you owned it, and why are you selling?
- Are you the title holder, and is the title clean?
- Has it ever been in an accident or had bodywork?
- Was it ever a rental, fleet or salvage vehicle?
Maintenance and condition
- Do you have service records I can see?
- When were the timing belt, brakes and tires last done?
- Are there any warning lights or known issues right now?
- Has it ever overheated or been in standing water?
The deal itself
- Is the price firm, and does it include any fees?
- Can I take it to an independent shop for inspection?
- Are there spare keys, the owner's manual and service history?
Good to Know
The single most important question is the last big one: "Can I get it inspected?" A confident yes is one of the best signs you'll get.
CarLens Pro Tip
Ask open-ended questions and then stay quiet. Silence often prompts sellers to volunteer information they'd otherwise keep to themselves.
